Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), formerly known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), is one of the most challenging and misunderstood chronic pain conditions. Common Symptoms
- Burning or throbbing pain, usually in an arm or leg
- Pain that is disproportionate to the original injury
- Skin color changes, red, purple, or mottled appearance
- Temperature sensitivity, the affected limb may feel hot or cold
- Swelling and joint stiffness in the affected area
- Allodynia, pain from stimuli that shouldn't cause pain, such as light touch
- Changes in nail and hair growth in the affected area
Common Causes
- Post-traumatic CRPS, following fracture, surgery, or soft tissue injury
- Nerve injury, damage to peripheral or central nervous system
- Inflammation, abnormal inflammatory response
- Autonomic nervous system dysfunction, changes in blood flow regulation
- Central sensitization, changes in how the brain processes pain signals
- In some cases, no identifiable trigger is found
