Overview

Sciatica Treatment in Chalfont, Trevose PA & Marlton NJ

Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, from the lower back, through the buttock, and down the back of the leg. It is most commonly caused by compression of the sciatic nerve by a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis. While sciatica often improves on its own, persistent or severe cases require expert intervention.

At DVPSI, our specialists use targeted epidural steroid injections and other minimally invasive treatments to reduce nerve inflammation and eliminate sciatic pain quickly, often with significant improvement after just one or two treatments.

Common Symptoms

  • Sharp, shooting pain from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg
  • Pain that worsens when sitting for extended periods
  • Burning or tingling sensation down the leg
  • Numbness or weakness in the affected leg or foot
  • Difficulty standing or walking due to leg pain
  • Pain that is typically worse on one side
  • Electric shock-like pain with certain movements

Common Causes

  • Herniated lumbar disc, the most common cause, disc material pressing on nerve roots
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal compressing nerve roots
  • Spondylolisthesis, vertebra sliding over another, pinching nerves
  • Piriformis syndrome, piriformis muscle irritating the sciatic nerve
  • Degenerative disc disease, disc breakdown and bone spur formation
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction, SI joint inflammation mimicking sciatica

Transforaminal Nerve Root Injections

Highly targeted injection directly to the inflamed nerve root for rapid relief.

03

Medial Branch Blocks

Diagnostic and therapeutic injections for facet-related sciatic symptoms.

04

Spinal Cord Stimulation

For chronic, treatment-resistant sciatica that has not responded to other treatments.

05

Percutaneous Discectomy

Minimally invasive procedure to reduce disc herniation pressure on the sciatic nerve.

06

Short-term anti-inflammatory and nerve pain medications as a bridge to procedural treatment.
